Write Like a Pro: Activities

Materials Needed:

  1. Six blank dice (or cardboard cut into squares to make dice)
  2. Permanent markers
  3. A timer
  4. Paper and pencils for each player

Each face of the dice will represent a different element of a story: characters, setting, problem, solution, and two categories for exciting events. Together, parents and kids can brainstorm ideas for each category and draw a simple representation of the idea on each face of the dice. For example, a character die could have a sketch of a robot, a princess, a dragon, a detective, a superhero, and an astronaut.

This game offers a fun, creative way to practice writing skills. Kids are required to write on diverse topics, encouraging them to think out of the box, expand their vocabulary, and use varied sentence structures. The time limit adds an exciting challenge and helps children learn to write under time constraints.

By sharing their stories, children practice reading their work aloud and accept feedback, an essential part of the writing process. Additionally, listening to others’ stories can inspire new ideas and expose them to different writing styles and techniques.

The Story Cubes game aligns perfectly with the objectives of the “Write Like a Pro” program, enhancing children’s understanding of different narrative elements, sentence structures, and creative writing.
